O Tempo Não Pára Premieres in Brazil with a bang!

August 01, 2018

Last night in Brazil, the hugely anticipated telenovela, O Tempo Não Pára, commenced at the 7 p.m. belt replacing the just ended Deus Salve O Rei.

O Tempo Não Pára, which translates into English as, Time does not stop, is a romantic comedy and is an original story by Mario Teixeira.

The telenovela explores the very controversial topic of cryogenics and is a very witty time bound tale.

We meet an affluent family called the Sabino Machado in the year 1886. The family owns a sizeable and enviable terrain of land that is rich in mineral ores as well as investments in telephony.

The plot sets off as the family decides to travel to Europe on a ship that is known to be the most safe build that has ever been – The Albatross.

The family’s patriarch, Dom Sabino, played by Edson Celulari, wants to visit a shipyard he has bought in England. The purpose of this trip, however is to also keep is daughter, Marocas, played by Juliana Paiva, away from the gossip that is spewing in the city about how she left a man at the altar, during an arranged wedding.

Now, during the trip, there is a detour that the ship has to take, and it is this very detour that will mark the very incident that sets off the very amazing plot of this telenovela.

The so called safest ship, The Albatross, collides with an iceberg and we get to see a very uncanny resemblance to the Titanic, (a foreshadowing of sorts seeing as the Titanic capsized in 1914)

Everyone on board including Dom Sabino, his wife, Dona Agustina, their daughter, Marocas, the twins of the family, Kiki and Nico – adding to that list the workers who accompanied the family, Damásia, Cairu, Cesára, Menelá, Cecílio and their book-keeper whose name is Teófilo, the preceptor, Miss Celine and a young boy, Bento…)Did I mention that even their dog, a fox terrier whose name is Pirato, is also in the mix)…….freezes!

They stay frozen for 132 years, without dying, surprisingly from the cold and then in 2018, present day, we meet Samuca. Samuca is a businessman involved in social work and is the owner of SamVita Holdings and the Vita Foundation. The block of ice in which the Machado family is frozen in, approaches the Guarujá beach in São Paulo.

Samuca, who happens to be surfing stumbles upon the block and is instantly drawn to the face of the beautiful Marocas.

A fissure threatens to break the block and in reaction to wanting to save Marocas, he clings to the block and a current leads them all to the fictional Vermelha Isalnd. The other frozen products find their way to Criotec, a laboratory specializing in cryogenics.

The ice block holding the Machado family and their help, will soon unfreeze, and a new reality of technology, big buildings, modernized clothes and new vocabulary will startle the family, who just ended up in a time, that none of them signed up for.

O Tempo Não Pára promises to be a very entertaining comedy of a family that just happened to find themselves in a very amusing wrong turn that could change their lives forever…but will it be for better, or for worse?

The telenovela has a very stellar cast of actors renowned to the Brazilian and some, to the African audience as well. The leading actress is Juliana Paiva playing Marocas (Last seen as Beth in Cat’s Cradle), alongside Nicolas Prattes who plays Samuca. We alson have names likes Rosi Campos, the infamous Mamúska from Shades of Sin, Cleo Pires who was Estela in Destiny River, with Christina Torloni(Looks and Essence), Aline Dias (Tangled Hearts) Regiane Alves (Tangled Hearts) and Edson Celulari (Destiny River). 156 episodes of O Tempo Não Pára have been confirmed.

This storyline is definitely a winner from Globo, and I don’t know about you guys, but I am looking forward to seeing this story go international!
